Ising Model

A grid of tiny magnets, each pointing up or down. Below a critical temperature they spontaneously align — order from chaos with no external command. Above it, thermal noise destroys all structure. At the critical point itself, fluctuations exist at every scale: fractal domains, no characteristic size. Onsager solved this exactly in 1944.
