Chladni Figures

Sand on a vibrating plate migrates to the nodal lines — places where the plate doesn’t move. The result is a Chladni figure: a standing wave made visible. Mode numbers m and n determine the pattern’s symmetry and complexity. Chladni demonstrated these in 1787; the mathematics was only explained by Sophie Germain decades later.
